President’s Update
As we head into the final weeks before trails open, there’s a real sense of anticipation across the OFTR community. Another riding season is just around the corner, and we’re looking forward to getting back out there, reconnecting with fellow riders, and making lasting memories on the trails.
I’d like to begin by recognizing and sincerely thanking Brian Dueck for his outstanding commitment to the OFTR over the past six years. Brian has consistently gone above and beyond in his support of the organization. From playing a key role in bringing in the membership and trail pass system, to contributing to the development of detailed policies that guide our operations today, his impact has been significant and lasting. On behalf of the OFTR, thank you, Brian, for your dedication and hard work. We wish you luck on your future endeavours.
I’d also like to introduce your current OFTR Executive team:
- President/Chair: Joel Castonguay
- Vice-President: Brad Obee
- Secretary: Art Ash
- Treasurer: Lina Petra
This team is committed to continuing the work of strengthening our organization, supporting our clubs, and protecting access to the trails we all value.
On that note, I want to bring an important issue to your attention.
The Ontario government is currently seeking public input on a proposal to expand Charleston Lake Provincial Park (ERO #025-0031). The proposal includes over 900 hectares of Crown land that are currently used for a variety of trail activities. While the proposal identifies ATV and snowmobile use as existing trail uses that may continue, off-road motorcycles are not explicitly included.
Off-road motorcyclists have a long history of responsible use on these lands, including both single-track and double-track trail systems. It is essential that our community is recognized and included in any future access decisions.
We are asking our members to take a few minutes to submit a comment through the Environmental Registry of Ontario, requesting that off-road motorcycles be explicitly included as a permitted use within the proposed park addition. Please don’t share any personal information.
Your voice matters. Participation from our community is critical to ensuring fair and continued access for off-road riders.
More information on how to submit your comments can be found through the Environmental Registry (ERO #025-0031). Comments must be made by April 20. Even if you don’t use those trails have your say as this could impact future expansions.
Thank you all for your continued support of the OFTR. We look forward to a safe and enjoyable riding season ahead.
Sincerely,
Joel Castonguay
President/Chair, OFTR
