Toronto ON – December 7, 2018 – The Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council is very pleased that under Premier Ford`s leadership, the province of Ontario is committed to developing modern, outcome-focused and evidence-based regulations.
With the industry members of MMIC preparing new electric motorcycles for the Canadian market in the very near future, it was discovered that Ontario had an outdated and unnecessary regulation that would have had an impact the new environmentally-friendly products.
Ontario Regulation 630 prevented electric motorcycles from accessing all of Ontario`s King’s Highways. Effectively Regulation 630 prohibited electric motorcycles from driving on all 400 series highways.
If maintained, Ontario would have been the only province restricting electric motorcycles from riding on highways. In fact, Ontario would have been the only jurisdiction in North America to restrict electric motorcycles.
“As an industry group, we certainly believe in the importance of working with governments on legislation. We are pleased with Premier Ford`s commitment of working proactively and collaboratively on matters of mutual interest” stated Bob Ramsay, President of the Motorcycle and Moped Industry Council.
The MMIC is a national not for profit industry association which represents the major manufacturers and distributors of motorcycles in Canada.
“With the introduction of new technologies, the industry had asked that the restrictive outdated provision be removed and we are delighted that the government has acted so quickly in assuring the motorcycle industry that Ontario is in fact open for business and on the same playing field as the rest of North America” added Ramsay.
The Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council, originally founded in 1971, is a national, non-profit, trade association which represents the responsible interests of the major motorcycle and scooter manufacturers, as well as the manufacturers and distributors of motorcycle and scooter-related products and services in Canada. The member companies of the MMIC account for over 90 percent of all the new motorcycles and scooters sold in Canada.
