The unique Super Hooligans race presented by Indian Motorcycles, supporting the Superprestigio of the Americas event at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, was won by Harley-Davidson mounted Thor Drake. Based in Portland, Or, Drake moved into the lead late in the eight lapper, showing considerable style with his all white, street cruising riding gear. Drake’s prize for victory in the new concept Super Hooligans race was a brand new, just launched, Indian Scout motorcycle.
Second belonged to another H-D v-twin piloted by Chris Wiggins of Terre Haute, IN, less than a second back of Drake at the end of the busy Final. Wiggins lead six of the eight laps before Drake caught him in heavy traffic around the one tenth of a mile track.
Third overall after a poor start was class guru Roland Sands of Long Beach, CA, the former AMA Pro 250cc Grand Prix Champ. Famed bike builder Sands charged through the 13 rider field to complete the podium.
The Super Hooligan final had several incidents and tumbles, but no injuries and no major damage to the field of street-based, minimum 750cc, four-stroke twins. Track builder and seven time AMA Grand National Champ Chris Carr described the Super Hooligans as “kind of like the class C bikes that raced in the AMA back in the 1950s and ‘60s. I think the Rulebook would say more, if they had a rulebook.”
