The Phillip Island 8 Hour Australian Endurance Championship, scheduled for November 30-December 2, has been cancelled.
Despite extending the closing time for entries there are insufficient competitors registered to conduct the event.
Canadian Dan Kruger, a regular competitor in China, was scheduled to take part in the Phillip Island race.
“We had hoped to build a tradition with this event at Phillip Island in much the same way as the long standing MotoGP, Superbike World Championship and the Island Classic,” said Fergus Cameron, managing director of Phillip Island Circuit. “Despite our best efforts the response has been very slow, possibly due to the current economic times. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes to competitors who had already entered.”
In an email Kruger said he was disappointed by the news.
“I still have my Three Hour Endurance Race in Zhuhai, China December 8-9, which will be big but I am bummed about the PI cancellation,” Kruger said. “Thank goodness I have the Suzuka Eight Hour to look forward to in 2013.”
