Valentine’s Day can be complicated for some people. Maybe you’re between relationships. Or in a twist of irony, you can’t choose who to take out. There’s also the possibility that the timing isn’t right, or the weather isn’t appropriate. You might not have the right outfit. Depends. One thing is for sure, even if you’ve found “the one,” you remember what it’s like to let go, and you no matter how long it’s been, you always remember how it started.
Typically, I don’t contemplate the trajectory of my relationships, and I have never shared that kind of thing in the public domain, but a friend of mine recently posted her #valentinesdaychallenge so I thought I should too. Here’s how it went with Valentina. (And yes, that is her real name)
How’d we meet? Craig’s List.
First Date? Her driveway.
How long have you been together? Almost five years.
Married? There was almost as much paperwork, but no. Common law.
Age difference? Age is just a number, right?
Who was interested first? Me.
Who is taller? I need to stand on my toes to make it work, but I don’t mind.
Who said I love you first? That was also me.
Most impatient? Valentina.
Most sensitive? She goes from 0-60 fast!
Loudest? Valentina is measured in decibels.
Most stubborn? I prefer the word “tenacious.”
Falls asleep first? I get tired first, but she falls asleep faster.
Better morning person? I will never win this category.
Better driver? Valentina doesn’t need me to ride well.
Most competitive? Definitely Valentina.
Where do you eat out most as a couple? We have very different tastes, and she only eats out.
Who is more social? I’m less intimidating.
Who is the neat freak? I’d say we’re even.
Who initiated your first kiss? Okay, by now we’re clear I’m talking about my FZ8, right?
How long did it take to get serious? Immediately. Valentina was BORN serious.
Who picks where you go to dinner? She takes me where I want to go if she’s been fed.
Who is the first one to admit when they’re wrong? I’ve made a few mistakes.
Who wears the pants in the relationship? I wear pants against road rash. She’s in charge.
Who sings better? We’re both singers.
Spends the most? I pay all our bills.
Where is the furthest you two have traveled together? Upstate New York from Toronto, the long way. But she travelled coast-to-coast before we met.
Who drives when you are going somewhere together? We both get us where we’re going.

Now you know more about my 2013 Yamaha FZ8, “Valentina.” I purchased this bike in April of 2018 and gave her that name in honour of Valentino Rossi and his winning streak on Yamahas. It’s also because this four-cylinder hottie has incredible power both off the start and at the top end of the power band. The urge to experience the speed she delivers is almost impossible to resist.
I know I’ve said it before, but I love all my bikes, past, present, fleeting and future. They all make their marks, and that’s a beautiful thing that is worth celebrating every day of the year.
What about you? Tell us who captured your heart, and how it works between the two of you.
