In Saturday’s initial qualifying sessions at the World Superbike/AMA BigM Weekend at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah, Darren James was again the top Canadian qualifier after a provisional 7th place standing in the AMA XR1200 class with a best time just under 2:14. Ben Young’s best time of 2:03.5 in the first GoPro Daytona Sportbike qualifying session was seven seconds behind the leader, while Canadian-born Californian Javelin Broderick was well off the 1:59 performance by Hayden Gillim in the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Supersport session. Josh Hayes qualified on the pole in National Guard Superbike.
In eni World Superbike qualifying, Brett McCormick’s teammate Jacob Smrz topped qualifying, ahead of Carlos Checa in second and Marco Melandri in third.
The big factor was the weather, raining on and off for much of the day with very strong winds. Conditions are expected to improve with Monday’s race day expected to be a beautiful day.
