Riedmann wraps up Pro Sport Bike crown

BOWMANVILLE, Ont. — Kenny Riedmann clinched his first Pro title with a second-place finish in the final round of the Hindle Exhaust Pro Sport Bike Championship at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Sunday.  The Belfountain, Ont. rider finished the season with 193 points to the 151 of Jodi Christie, who vaulted from fifth to second in the point standings with a dominant win in Sunday’s race.

Riding his Honda Canada / Accelerated Technologies Honda CBR600RR, Christie finished the 12-lap race 8.046 secs. ahead of Riedmann on the Castrol Triumph 675. Riedmann was at the head of a fraught six-rider battle for the runner-up spot, with Amzy Nawaz of Thornton, Ont. completing the podium in third place on his Blue Streak Racing Kawasaki ZX-6R.

“That was the longest 12 laps of my life,” Riedmann said. “I wanted to hang with Jodi but he took off and I didn’t have the confidence to go with him right away. I came into this race thinking I would win if I could, but Jodi was just so fast, and the championship means more so I hung back. I’m pretty happy to at least get second. And I got to do my first ever burn out on the victory lap!”

The win was the first of the season for Christie, who saw a string of three straight Pro Sport Bike championships come to an end.

A third place finish was enough to give Pedro Sousa the Magneti Marelli Amateur Superbike title. Riding his Honda CBR1000RR, the Mississauga, Ont. racer finished behind the OCM Motor Sports / Peterborough Cycle Salvage Yamaha YZF-R6 of Peterborough, Ont.’s Tomas Casas and Brampton, Ont.’s Tony Lanni aboard the ProStar Motorsports Honda CBR1000RR in the 12-lap race, but that gave him the title by 10 points over Casas, 199-189.

Casas did take the Bell Helmets Amateur Sport Bike crown thanks to an impressive ride from 21st spot on the starting grid to the victory in the 10-lap race on Sunday. Casas finished 9.332 secs. clear of the OCM Motor Sports / FTR / Honda Canada Honda CBR600RR of St-Lazare, Que.’s Stacey Nesbitt, and beat her by 13 points in the championship, 232-219.

Longueuil, Que.’s Alex Coelho finished third in the race on the Black Sheep Racing Kawasaki ZX-6R.

In special awards in the Amateur Sport Bike class, Ottawa’s Samuel Dutrisac got the Dion Device Hard Luck Award for Saturday’s race after crashing out and Elmsdale, N.S.’s Geoff Cole received it on Sunday after his engine blew and brought an early end to his weekend.

The Ipone Award for presentation went to North York, Ont. Honda CBR600RR rider Jamie Young on Saturday and London, Ont.’s Phillip Leckie, aboard a Suzuki GSX-R600, on Sunday.

In a dramatic turn of events Jacob Shaw-O’Leary clinched the Honda CBR250R National Race Series title at CTMP on Sunday. Notre Dame de L’Ile Perrot, Que.’s Eric Quintin came into the weekend with the points lead but crashed out of Sunday morning’s race while leading, turning over the advantage to Shaw-O’Leary. The Falmouth, N.S. racer then wrapped up the title with a third place finish in the season finale later in the day, which was won by Quintin.

Cameron Walker of Oakville, Ont. won the day’s opening race and finished second in the finale.

Shaw-O’Leary ended the season with 351 points to the 328 of Quintin and Walker’s 311.
