Joining an elite group of riders, Marc Marquez claimed his 50th victory in the premier class after a chaotic start to the Czech GP as Stefan Bradl continued his point-scoring run.
Saturday’s dreary conditions were initially nowhere to be seen as race day at the Czech GP began. But a brief rain shower half an hour before the start of the MotoGP race left the track with wet patches and led to a delayed start and a reduced race distance of 20 laps.
After securing pole by 2.524 seconds in thrilling style on Saturday, MotoGP World Championship leader Marc Marquez shot forward to lead the shortened race as the lights went out. With the likes of Dovizioso, Rins and Miller behind, Marquez settled into a consistent pace and steadily opened up a half second lead over his rivals by lap ten. Even with a moment at Turn 10, Marquez’s lead continued to grow as the race went on.
With an advantage of over two seconds, Marquez crossed the line to claim victory in Brno and his sixth win of 2019. He becomes just the fourth rider in Grand Prix history to take 50 wins in the premier class and equals Mike Hailwood’s 76 wins across all classes. Fourth on the all time winner list, Marquez heads to round 11 in Austria with 210 points – 63 points clear of second placed Dovizioso.
Stefan Bradl endured a tough start to his third appearance of the season, but worked his way forward into the points by half-race distance. Holding 14th until late in the race, Bradl continued his run of point scoring finishes with 15th. The German will again ride for the Repsol Honda Team at the Austrian GP with Jorge Lorenzo scheduled to return to action at Silverstone.
The result sees Honda extend their lead in the Constructor Championship to 39 points with a total of 216 points.
Before heading to the Red Bull Ring for the Austrian GP, August 09 – 11, the Repsol Honda Team will remain in Brno for a post-race test on Monday alongside the rest of the MotoGP World Championship grid.
“I was really concentrated from the beginning as there were still some wet patches, especially at Turn 1. I knew I needed to keep my rhythm as the Yamaha riders were starting from behind and they were strong in Warm Up. Then I saw that Dovi was behind me so I had to keep pushing and pushing. I had a little warning on lap 10 because that is when I started to push more to try and open the gap. Delaying the race was the best decision that could have been made because the track was in a mixed condition and it could have been quite dangerous. A crazy weekend with the weather but the whole Repsol Honda Team were perfect and helped me a lot to achieve victory!”
“I’m not happy with the final result because I think we had a lot more potential. Since Friday we have been improving but the conditions of Saturday and lack of time hurt us in the race today and I struggled with rear grip and turning during the race. It has been a very busy weekend and we were able to work a lot for Honda. To score was good but I am hoping for more in Austria. I’m excited to be asked to join the Repsol Honda Team once again next week and I am already thinking about the race.”

Andrea Dovizioso stepped onto the podium of the Czech Republic Grand Prix today at the Brno circuit after a great run in second place. The Italian, who powered away well at the start from the second row, immediately slotted in behind poleman Marquez, and held on to the same position until the chequered flag.
Eighth place for team-mate Danilo Petrucci, who started from the third row. The Italian rider, who was seventh at the end of the opening lap, dropped down a couple of positions in the next few laps but was able to get back into eighth place on lap 13, finishing the race behind Quartararo.
Dovizioso and Petrucci maintain their second and third positions respectively with 147 and 129 points in the overall standings. Ducati remain second in the Constructors’ classification with 177 points while the Ducati Team increases its lead in the special teams’ standings by 40 points and is now on 276.
Andrea Dovizioso (#04 Ducati Team) – 2nd
“I’m happy with my second place today and the fact that we were fast all through the weekend, even though unfortunately it wasn’t enough to win the race. I opted for a different rear tyre to Marquez and at the start I pushed hard to stay close to him, but when he began to brake harder I didn’t have any margin to push harder at the front. Pity, but we weren’t that far away from him, so we have to continue to believe in ourselves: I’m still positive because tomorrow there will be an important test day here at Brno, with a lot of new material to try out.”
Danilo Petrucci (#9 Ducati Team) – 8th
“For sure this was the most difficult race of the year for me. I missed out on being able to lap in the dry yesterday, because already on Friday I was struggling a bit at this circuit. The race was tough because right from the start I didn’t have much grip and the leaders went away immediately, and then it was also difficult to fight with the others because in the final stages I had finished the tyres. Pity, because Rins made up a few points on me in the standings even though I’m still in third, but luckily tomorrow we’ll have an entire day of testing to understand what to improve.”
The Ducati Team will be back on track at Brno tomorrow for a one-day official test and then the MotoGP circus will head directly to Zeltweg for the Austrian Grand Prix, which is scheduled for the Red Bull Ring circuit from 9 to 11 August.

Red Bull KTM picked up more MotoGP points as both Pol Espargaro and Johann Zarco finished 11th and 14th respectively at a warm Brno for the Monster Energy Ceske republiky today. Red Bull KTM Tech3’s Miguel Oliviera was the third RC16 rider in the top fifteen with a creditable 13th.
MotoGP clicked into the second half of the 2019 campaign with the visit to the popular and demanding Automotodrom Brno circuit and where a wet and complicated day of qualification changed to largely summery conditions for the tenth round of nineteen.
The 50th Grand Prix at Brno started brilliantly for KTM with the manufacturer’s best qualification results in their short two-and-a-half year spell in the premier class: Johann Zarco obtaining the KTM RC16’s first front row position with 3rd and Pol Espargaro equalling a previous best with 5th place.
On Sunday afternoon a freak shower on part of the track caused a 40 minute delay and plenty of consternation among the teams and riders as the grid formed up. The race was shortened from 21 to 20 laps and declared a ‘Flag to Flag’ sprint.
Espargaro initially ran within the top five as Zarco could not ace a start to head the pack. The Spaniard struggled with rear tyre grip to slip just outside the top ten while Zarco defeated Stefan Bradl to place just behind Oliveira. The Portuguese’s teammate, Hafizh Syahrin, crashed out in the first laps.
Pol Espargaro: “Qualifying went very well, and today we could keep the rhythm near the front for the first four-five laps after making a good start in very tricky conditions. Then we had some wheel-spin as the tyre dropped, mostly on the straights, and it meant we lost some positions. I tried to go with Valentino [Rossi], [Danilo] Petrucci and [Cal] Crutchlow but it was complicated. I was losing a lot each lap. So, some positives and negatives today and we’re looking forward to tomorrow to see if we can make some improvements. We have a big target for next weekend.”
Johann Zarco: “Not the plan we had. The start was a disaster. I think I had some spin because I was on the right side of the track where there were some wet patches. It was the right decision to wait forty minutes and start the race with the slick. I messed-up the start but it was good to fight and I did my best to be as constant as possible. In the end it was good to be in the points and to beat the guy I was racing with at the end. I want to say I am happy but it is because I did not finish the last two races and that is the most disappointing thing. Compared to yesterday 14th is not so satisfying but it’s where I am at the moment.”
Miguel Oliveira: “It was a nice race: difficult for everyone, especially to manage the grip of the rear tyre. The pace was the best I could do. We did a great job after having only one day of practice in the dry, the team gave me a nice bike to ride, so I’m really happy for that. The gap to the first is not so big, it’s the second-best gap that we had all season. We are definitely on a line of improvement and we just need to keep working like this.”
Hafizh Syahrin: “I’m very disappointed. It was a really good race. I felt confident and I was one of the only three riders to choose the hard tyre in front but for some reason we suddenly lost the front. Plus, the start was strange. I tried to put in the launch control, but it was not working and also the dashboard was a bit confused, so I needed to start without launch control, which was very difficult for me. But on the first lap I was really strong and on the second one, I caught back up with the group. I arrived in 15th and knew I would be able to pass Aleix [Espargaro], but first I tried to stay with Maverick [Viñales] and to pull away a little bit and then the crash happened. That’s racing, I feel sorry for everyone.”
Mike Leitner, Red Bull KTM Team Manager: “In general the weekend for KTM was not so bad but for sure our target was the top ten. Pol nearly did it but lost the rear tyre quite dramatically after mid-race distance and could not keep his position. He did a great job and we need to work harder so our tyre life stays longer. Johann rode well to get a good position on the grid but the bad luck with the weather meant it was very wet on that side and it affected him to focus and make a good start. He scored two points and all of us are not so happy with that but it’s where we are right now. Miguel had a decent race and we had three bikes in the points. Tomorrow we’ll test and try some items to improve lap-times and stability for the race. Next week is our home GP and we are focussed on our target there and to finish in a good position.”
Moto2 & Moto3
Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Brad Binder tumbled from a top ten position in Moto2 while teammate Jorge Martin rode to 13th place. Iker Lecuona was the highest RC12 runner with 10th spot. Moto3 featured at least twelve riders in the leading group and tussling for podium honours. Victory went to Sterilgarda Max Racing Team’s Aron Canet for the fifth time this season and Bester Capital Dubai’s Jaume Masia registered 4th. Canet leads Moto3 by 3 points from Lorenzo Dalla Porta. Brno saw Can Öncü in action with his twin brother, Deniz, for the first time in Red Bull KTM Ajo colours. Can continues to improve his speed and was at the back of the principal gaggle, eventually coming home in 14th for just his second batch of GP points in 2019. Deniz managed 18th on his FIM World Championship debut.
Brno cannot rest just yet. All the MotoGP teams will gather for the IRTA test on Monday and then a busy and eagerly awaited home Grand Prix lies in store for KTM next week; the myWorld Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich, taking place once more at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

After a three-week break, the MotoGP World Championship is ready to resume action at Brno (Czech Republic), home of the tenth round on the calendar, and officially begin the second half of the season. The Moravian track, characterized by its elevation changes, evokes good memories for both Andrea Dovizioso and Danilo Petrucci, who ended the last race in Germany separated by only 92 thousandths of a second on the finish line: Dovizioso took five podiums in total at Brno, including a fantastic win last year ahead of his then teammate Jorge Lorenzo, while Petrucci has always finished the race within the top ten with Ducati. Let's discover ten key data about next round:
- The Brno circuit opened in 1987 and hosted the World Championship each year except 1992. Brno is also the only track on the calendar that hasn't undergone any layout modifications since its inauguration.
- The largest elevation change on the track is 74 metres, starting from the high point at the entrance of turn 3 (450 metres) to the lowest point between turns 10 and 11 (376 metres).
- Originally a public-roads Grand Prix, Brno is ready to host the World Championship for the 50th time. Assen is currently the only venue on the calendar to have hosted more World Championship races.
- In 32 years since its opening in 1987, the Brno circuit only hosted one wet race in 2016.
- In Brno, MotoGP riders brake 11 times, for a total of 31 seconds per lap. The most challenging braking area coincides with turn 10: riders enter it at speeds around 280 km/h and brake for 4.2 seconds to decelerate to 100 km/h applying 6.2 kg on the brake lever.

- Ducati scored eigth podiums in total at Brno with 6 different riders: Bayliss, Capirossi, Stoner, Elias, Lorenzo and Dovizioso.
- Andrea Dovizioso's best result at Brno coincides with the win seized last year at the end of a spectacular race in a sprint to the finish line, ahead of Jorge Lorenzo (second) and Marc Márquez (third).
- Danilo Petrucci has always finished within the top ten at Brno since joining Ducati. Petrucci's best result to date is sixth, scored last year as he finished just three seconds behind the winner Dovizioso.
