BOWMANVILLE, Ont. – Philippe Masse took his third win of the year to clinch the Inside Motorcycles Amateur Sport Bike title on his racingphil.com / Pete’s Superbike Kawasaki ZX-6R at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Saturday.
The St-Hyacinthe, Que. racer finished 4.105 secs. ahead of Trevor Daley aboard the OneSpeed / Riders Choice / ProStar Motorsports Honda CBR600RR while Will Hornblower of Sarnia, Ont. took third riding his Hornblower Racing / Blue Streak / ProPulsion Yamaha YZF-R6.
After starting from pole Masse snatched the lead from Zaid Saleemi on lap two of the red-flag shortened 10-lap race and was never threatened the rest of the way.
“I wasn’t really going for the win and I just tried to stay in a safe zone with my pace,” Masse said. “I’ve been trying for a long time to win this championship. The last two years have been a lot of hard work.
“It will be fun tomorrow with the pressure off.”
Amateur Superbike points leader Daley was making his first start of the year in the Sport Bike class after borrowing the Honda from Ben Gartner of ProStar when his Suzuki GSX-R1000 suffered an engine failure in testing on Thursday.
Despite his lack of track time on the bike Daley qualified second and ran in that spot comfortably from lap two. He was named the Performance Under Gear Performer of the Race.
Hornblower came into the race as Masse’s closest challenger for the Amateur Sport Bike title. After starting fifth he was only seventh after the opening lap but worked his way up to third by lap four.
Nuno Almeida of Newcastle, Ont. placed fourth on his Noodles Racing / GP Bikes / Eurocorsa Triumph 675 and moved up to third in the class point standings, ahead of the absent Austin Shaw-O’Leary.
Mitch Card of Ripley, Ont. completed the top five riding his Ripley Racing Honda CBR600RR.
Saleemi, who had been judged to have jumped the start, retired his Z1 Cycletech Suzuki GSX-R600 after nine laps.
