Montreal, Quebec- The Royal Distributing Racing Team opted for the second round of the RACE Superseries at Shannonville this past weekend, instead of the conflicting Mopar Canadian Superbike series event in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. The deciding factor was the long 14-hour drive necessary to get to Shubie. The decision was worthwhile, as rider Michael Leon finished on the podium in each of his three final races.
The most dramatic race of the weekend was the Pro 600 class. Leon and Sean Huffman went at it, wheel to wheel, for the entire race, both riding equally matched CBR600RRs. Michael was leading the race until the final lap when Huffman attempted a last minute inside pass at the end of the Shannonville straight. Huffman braked so late that he blew the corner and had to use the escape road, forcing Michael to go with him. Both riders were able to rejoin the race. Huffman won, Aubrey Bailey was second and Michael finished third.
The Open Masters race was another good battle. Michael went toe to toe with BMW S1000RR rider Steve Walker, even managing to lead across the line for a few laps, mid- race. Walker recovered the lead with 2 laps to go and Michael finished second. Third place went to Grant Smith.
The feature Pro Superbike race was another second place result for Leon. The race was won by Walker, riding his BMW Superbike. Michael diced in the opening laps with Aubrey Bailey who rode his CBR1000, before he managed to pass Bailey and pull a gap. Bailey finished in third place.
Michael would like to thank Dave and Louise Smith, sponsor John Petrilli (GianMajor Inc.) and his wife and daughters for coming out to the track to support the team. Also much thanks to Pro 6 Cycle and Dunlop Tires for the generous Contingency program and trackside technical support.
The next event for the Royal Distributing Team will be at Shannonville for Rd 3 at the Fabi layout, Aug 3-5th.
