Shoei VFX-Evo Helmet

MSRP: Starting at $699.99

Sizes: XS to XXL

The VFX-Evo came out in 2017 as a long overdue update to the Shoei VFX-W model. Shoei’s flagship dirt helmet is now equipped with its proprietary Motion Energy Distribution System (M.E.D.S) which is similar to what other manufacturers have developed to reduce rotational acceleration energy to the head during a crash. What they have done is redesign the EPS layer by anchoring the inner EPS layer around a large center column with new perimeter columns; this allows the inner EPS layer to swing during an impact. The VFX-Evo also comes with the Emergency Quick Release System that allows for safe removal of cheek pads in case of a head/neck injury. It is extremely refreshing seeing all the helmet manufacturers stepping up their game in inventing new safety features and not use the same mould and EPS foam shells for decades.

Outside of the new safety features, the Evo comes with four different shell sizes (XS-XXL). The helmet weighs 3 lb, 9oz in size large, which is three ounces more than its predecessor. And it feels heavy when compared to the lightweights like Airoh. The venting ports aren’t the largest compared to the competition but apparently improve air flow compared to the previous model. I did not overheat in this helmet when riding in +25 degrees Celsius temperatures.

Shoei fit is good and typical oval head-shape fit that you can expect of Shoei. I personally have a more of a round head and always struggled with a Shoei fit so I noticed right away the narrow feel of the helmet/cheek pad shape on the sides of the head. There are no pressure points per se and the helmet is really comfortable, especially the soft liner which is supposed to be better at sweat absorption with the ability to absorb a claimed two times its weight in moisture.

The helmet does have new aggressive design with multiple raised ridges on the outside shell, making it one of the better-looking helmets on the market, and the rubber pad on the sides of the large eye port does allow for better goggle fit and security. Pair that with outstanding colour schemes to choose from and the Evo is one sexy lid.

Overall, the new VFX-Evo is everything you usually expect from a Shoei. Extremely well made in Japan with new implemented safety features but with a price tag that corresponds to the quality of the helmet.
