Brett McCormick, who suffered a tremendous crash during the World Superbike Championship in Assen, Netherlands during Sunday’s race, remains in hospital in the Netherlands but is expected to make a full recovery and expects to return home soon.
The Saskatoon native spoke live with CBC Radio Saskatchewan this morning and acknowledged that he’s not feeling too bad, but the pain is setting in. He explained that he broke the C5 vertebrae in his neck, which is “pretty scary to break”, but was lucky and the break was stable, with no nerve damage. Brett explained that he also had a few cracked vertebrae in his mid back.
While he doesn’t recall much of what happened following the crash, Brett does remember getting pushed wide following a pass from Carlos Checa in less than ideal conditions on a damp racetrack. He hit the wet pavement on the outside of the racetrack and was thrown off his Ducati 1098R.
Brett’s father and crew chief are with him in Assen and are waiting to hear when Brett can be moved in the coming days. Brett is expected to make a full recovery and plans to be back on the motorcycle as soon as possible, “I’d ride today if I could.”
