Injured Honda CBR250R National Race Series competitor Sean Smith is “in good spirits” according to message from his father on Monday afternoon.

The 17-year-old Calgary racer was part of a frightening three-rider crash in turn nine on the opening lap of Sunday’s season finale at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. According to the message from his father, forwarded by Honda Canada’s Kim Moore, Smith sustained a fractured pelvis and right wrist in the incident. He had been taken to Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital, and the family hoped he would undergo surgery later on Monday.

“He is in good spirits and thought he had a good chance of getting a podium if not win the race,” Smith’s father wrote. “He said he was gaining on Stacey [Nesbitt] when the three of them went down.”

Ryan Roche and Costa Mouzouris were also involved in the crash. Mouzouris suffered a shoulder injury that he thought might need eventual surgery, although he was able to walk to the medical centre. Roche managed to take part in the restarted race on a borrowed bike.

The Rocky Mountain Honda Powerhouse-backed Smith had competed in all rounds of the CBR250R series this year and had a top finish of third at Shannonville Motorsport Park. He had finished fourth in Saturday’s race at CTMP.
