Racers from across Western Canada and the United States gathered for the Sturgis North Nitro Nationals presented by Kamloops Harley- Davidson at the Eagle Motorplex in Ashcroft BC, from July 21-22 as the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association 2012 Season brought to you by Parts Canada and Drag Specialities continued its western swing.
Len Darnell of Vancouver, Washington had an excellent weekend taking home the first place trophies in the Superbike class as well as the highly contested Blackjack’s Roadhouse Pro Modified class. Picking up right where they left off in Edmonton, the Pro Mod racers occupied the top of the timesheets with Darnell posting a qualifying time of 6.977 seconds which was the quickest time achieved in any class on Saturday. Along with an improved track surface, Sunday brought even quicker times in the class, with 2011 CMDRA Pro Modified Champion Gary Christopher of Hope, B.C, having the day’s best run of 6.816 seconds at 209.3 mph in the penultimate elimination round to setup a head to head battle with Darnell. A 6.834 by Darnell in the final bested Christopher who ran at a time of 7.002.
The final elimination round of the Screamin’ Eagle Pro Dragster class featured a showdown between Rod Anderson of Monroe Washington and Al Miles of Edmonton,Alberta. In the closest heads up race of the day, Anderson ran a time of 8.031 seconds narrowly defeating Miles who finished with an 8.052.
The weekend got off to an early start on Friday when the CMDRA took over the town of Sicamous, B.C. for the highly anticipated 2nd annual Nitro Kick Off Party. Thousands of fans filled the streets for this “must attend” event taking in a burnout contest, slow ride skills course, stunt riding and freestyle motocross demonstrations, live musical entertainment and top CMDRA pros who braved a last minute thunder storm to perform their own burnouts.
Next up, the CMDRA moves to Medicine Hat for the Badlands Nationals.
