BOWMANVILLE, Ont. — A third place finish was enough to give Mississauga, Ont.’s Trevor Daley the Bazzaz Amateur Superbike title on the OneSpeed / Riders Choice / ProStar Motorsports Honda CBR600RR at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Sunday.
Tim Robinson of Gatineau, Que. ran away to his third straight Amateur Superbike win on the Robinson Racing / Gym-Max BMW S1000RR, finishing 23.299 secs. clear of the racingphil.com / Pete’s Superbike Kawasaki ZX-6R of Philippe Masse.
Daley ended the year with 260 points to Masse’s 223 and picked up a $20,000 Jeep Off Road Trailer from series title sponsor Mopar for his achievement.
Daley came into the final round knowing a finish would essentially guarantee him the championship. He ran fourth in the early laps before passing the Hornblower Racing / Blue Streak / ProPulsion Yamaha YZF-R6 of Will Hornblower on lap five of the 12 laps and stayed just in front of the Sarnia, Ont. racer the rest of the way.
“I wanted to play it smart,” said Daley, who finished on the podium in all six races this year. “I knew it wouldn’t take that much to win the title.”
Daley had been forced to borrow the Honda CBR600RR from ProStar Motorsports after his Suzuki GSX-R1000 lost its timing chain in testing on Thursday.
Robinson, meanwhile, ended his season on a roll and secured third place in the final standings.
“I knew I had the pace and really it was an unfair advantage, with me riding a 1000cc bike and most of these guys on 600s. But it is a Superbike class.
“I pulled a gap and got into a comfortable pace. It was pretty simple after that.”
Robinson received the $1,000 DUA Motorsport contingency payback as well as a prize pack from Mopar.
Masse took his second straight runner-up finish on the weekend.
“I knew I couldn’t win so I was aiming for second,” the St-Hyacinthe, Que. racer admitted. “I’m pretty happy with this finish.”
Steve Hoffarth of Orangeville, Ont. finished sixth on the Inside Motorcycles BMW S1000RR and ended the year 10th in the final standings.
