One week from now, we should know how the next chapter starts in one of the longest-running dramas in recent modern motorsport. Marc Marquez has announced his return to competition for round three of the 2021 MotoGP World Championship in Portimao, Portugal, April 18.

On April 4 – at the second race of the MotoGP season – Fabio Quartararo gave the Monster Energy Yamaha squad their impressive second win in a row, doing it under the flood lights at the Tissot Grand Prix in Doha, Qatar. His team-mate, Maverick Vinales, won the opener seven days earlier, at the same venue. This time, a slow-starting Vinales could only manage fifth, although well up in the giant lead pack.

The first round of the 2021 MotoGP series took place under the lights in Qatar, on Sunday evening, and Monster Yamaha’s team leader Maverick Vinales took a solid (for the modern era) victory at the Barwa-backed Losail circuit on the outskirts of Doha. Unlike previous seasons (but not 2020 when the main event was cancelled at the 11th hour due to the arrival of the Pandemic), this event did not feature a slip-streaming fight for the win at the finish line on the kilometer-long front straight.

One of the great things about producing a more-or-less weekly blog is the opportunity to switch gears on the fly. I had planned to write about MotoGP this week: the possible Qatar return of Honda’s Marc ‘much-missed’ Marquez, as well as the possibility of Andrea Dovizioso competing sometime soon for Aprilia’s premier squad. PRE-SEASON MOTOGP IN QATAR: For the 2021 MotoGP World Series, the only official pre-season running took place in early March in Doha, Qatar, in the Middle East. The other pre-season “full tour” tests – including the typical several days in Malaysia – couldn’t happen due to ongoing issues with the world-wide pandemic.

Roadracing defines pavement competition where leathers are worn and knees – and sometimes elbows – are dragged on the ground. In road racing, the activity is similar, but the action takes part on formerly open public roads. The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy is the most famous active road race.

The first motorcycle road race I ever took part in was on Victoria Day – at “old Mosport” – 45 years ago. My class was Junior 410 Production, and this title fit me well – I certainly qualified as an inexperienced, teen-aged Junior.

Four days from now, we should know who has won the 2015 MotoGP World Championship. I say “should" since protests and ongoing legal wrangling might delay the official results.
This type of behavior is rare in bike racing, more likely in automotive competition. However the days following October 25 and the penultimate 2015 season round in Malaysia have confirmed that we live in interesting times.
