21-year-old American road racer Tommy Aquino lost his life after a motocross crash on Sunday, Feb 2 at the Piru Ranch MX in Piru, California. Details are vague at this time, but reports indicate that a two-rider crash resulted in one rider being airlifted to hospital, while Aquino passed away at the scene.
“It is with massive regret that we confirm the extremely sad passing of our friend and rider Tommy Aquino,” said a post on the GR Motorsport WD-40 team website, for which Aquino raced in the British National Superstock series. “Tommy was a great asset to our Team and a welcome addition to my family. Tommy was enjoying a day with his father ‘Tom’ and Friend and became involved in a freak accident! The thoughts of all our Team members, sponsors and friends are with Tom, Carrie [mother] and Michael [brother] as this tragic loss is shared.”
Aquino raced in 2012 with Canadian-based FOGI Racing in the Spanish CEV series. Before that he raced with the AMA, winning one race and finishing third in the Daytona SportBike class in 2011.
Inside Motorcycles sends its deepest sympathies to Tommy’s family, team, friends and motorcycling community.
